Welcome to Opus30.net! This is a place where ideas may be shared and where reflections of the spiritual, musical and practical variety may be found. There are three components to this website, although all three intermingle and respond to one another, like three voices in a fugue. The New Paths Newsletter, Message Board, and the Opus30 Mission Page.
Opus30.net is the home of "New Paths", a monthly newsletter consisting of my own reflections and essays, with occasional articles from contributers. The title "New Paths" comes from an actual essay written by Robert Schumann in 1853, in the "New Journal of Music", which Schumann had founded in 1834. Schumann's own music was infused with literary allusions and romantic sensibilities combined in such a way that the music and allusions were inseparable. Schumann's essay "New Paths" heralded the arrival of the then young Johannes Brahms upon the music scene. In Schumann's words, Brahms was the individual "fated to give expression to the times in the highest and most ideal manner..." The task of New Paths is to fulfill these very expectations. Just as musical history reached a turning point with the arrival of Brahms, our own modern history is now at a more encompassing turning point. The advent of modern warfare, economic imperialism, and global corporate suppression represent dire threats to spiritual and artistic survival. The modern-day Philistines who control and corrupt society seem to have the upper hand in matters that effect the lives of millions.
The Message Board provides a venue for your feedback and insights. Through the Message Board your voice can be heard above what Walt Whitman referred to as "the clank of the world". Please feel free to visit the New Paths Message Board and contribute your thoughts and share what's on your mind.
The Opus30 Mission is dedicated to the ongoing saga of Mr. Shane Watson. Mr. Watson is a victim of injustice, a father, and a person worthy of attention. Artistic ideals and profound thoughts are all necessary for a fuller life. However, these ideals lose credibility and all value unless they are grounded by "walking the walk". My vision is to witness Mr. Watson walk out of prison a free man. With your input and energy, this will come to pass.
